“The Belden Flash”, “A one man blitz” and “Mr. Basketball of Lorain County”, are just some of the accolades that were heaped upon the broad shoulders of Larry Schaefer as the star right forward of the Belden High School “Bees” rewrote the Lorain County record books. Scoring a total of 342 points his first two years, he really turned it up a few notches his junior and senior seasons. He scored 457 points for an average of 22 points per game as a junior and 625 points and 31.25 points per game in a historical senior year. He scored over 30 points in each of six games and surpassed 40 points in six other games during those years. Larry’s Belden team went 19-1 his senior year. A player, who could do it all, Larry is quick however, to credit his coach, John Evanoff and his teammates for much of his success.

Larry could do more than just score. A tough rebounder and defender, many of his points came from tip-ins and intercepted passes that he would take the length of the floor for the score. He was a very accurate foul shooter and he had numerous opportunities to show his prowess, as opponents were frustrated by his ability to shoot from any angle and of course with either hand. Coach Evanoff called his 5’11” 170lb phenom a natural and gifted athlete who would have excelled in football or any other sport had they been available for him to pursue.

Records are made to be broken and some of Larry’s have been surpassed, but his single season total of 625 points, 31.25 per game average, 1,424 career points and 45 point game are still impressive numbers and he is the only basketball player in Lorain County history to hold all four records at one time.

Area fans still talk about the scintillating performances of the scoring machine from Belden High School.

Larry is retired and lives in Grafton Township (Belden) with his wife, Doris. They have three grown children, Ron, Rob and Judi.
